October 28, 2025 - CULLMAN COUNTY – Voters in Cullman County went to the polls and spoke loud and clear giving Republican Cindy Myrex a landslide victory over Democrat Matt Glover in the special election for House District 12.
With 100% of precincts reporting, the unofficial results are as follows:
Cindy Myrex (the Republican) had 1,944 votes, 87.06%. The Democrat - Matt Glover received just 287 votes, 12.85% There were two write-in votes, 0.09%
Myrex has won the Special General Election and will serve as the next State Representative for Alabama House District 12 for the next year.
Myrex explained why she was driven to run for the state house in a statement to ABC 33/40.
"The question of my motivation has been posed to me numerous times. In essence, it is driven by my love for my family, friends, community, and our traditions and rights. We require a steadfast champion in office who will tirelessly advocate for our collective interests. As someone who has navigated similar life paths, I am that champion. I have resided, worked, and engaged with this community, and I firmly believe that every demographic deserves representation, not just the privileged few".
Myrex is a lake realtor, a wife, mother, and conservative activist.
Alabama Republican Party Director of Legislative Affairs & Communications Jeannie Burniston released the following statement:
"On behalf of the Alabama Republican Party, I want to extend our congratulations to Representative-elect Cindy Myrex on a well-run race. Cindy's commitment to her community and conservative values will serve the people of House District 12 well. We look forward to working with her when the legislature returns to session next year."
This seat became vacant earlier this year when State Representative Corey Harbison resigned from the Alabama House of Representatives to spend more time with his family.
Republican domination in special election in rural north Alabama has been a consistent theme this summer. Myrex's landslide victory has been the norm thus far. In nearby Senate District 5 in Walker County Rep. Matt Woods (the Republican) was elected with 86.2% of the vote over Democrat Ryan Cagle's 13.8%. SD5 became vacant when Sen. Greg Reed (R) was appointed the head of the Department of Workforce. In House District 11 (Cullman and Blount Counties) Heath Allbright (the Republican) received 2,783 (88.8%); while Democratic opponent: Alexandria Braswell received 351 votes (11.2%) – closely mirroring the outcome in HD12. No Democrat even qualified to run in HD13 (which was vacated when Woods won the Senate seat) in Walker County so Republican Greg Barnes assumed office on October 2, 2025 after winning the special Republican primary.
Next up are special elections in:
• House District 63 where Rep. Cynthia Almond (R) was appointed President of the Public Service Commission. Republican Norman Crow faces Democrat Judith Haney in the Special HD63 general election on January 13.
• House District 38 where Rep. Debbie Wood (R) left the Legislature to move to Florida. A special Republican primary runoff between Garrett Dixon and Christin Nelson is scheduled to take place on November 18, 2025. The winner will face Democrat Hazel Floyd in the HD38 special general election on February 3, 2026.
Myrex's landslide victory means that Republicans hold a 74 to 29 supermajority in the Alabama House of Representatives while awaiting the special elections in the two vacant seats. Myrex will still have to run in next year's general election to retain the seat.
The large landslide victories for Republicans in the special elections is an indicator that 2026 could be a challenging year for Democratic candidates in Alabama.
The Republican primary is May 19, 2026.
