May 15, 2025 – MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama Legislature has passed legislation to exempt nursing moms from having to perform jury duty service.
Senate Bill 76 (SB76) was sponsored by State Senator April Weaver (R-Briarfield). State Representative Susan Dubose (R-Grandview) carried the bill in the House.
On Wednesday, Weaver said that the bill had been amended in the House of Representatives to require the mother/prospective juror to produce documentation of the birth and that she is a nursing mother.
Sen. Weaver asked the Senate to concur with House changes. They voted 28 to 0 to accept House changes.
"This act shall be known and may be cited as Parker's Law."
The motion to concur with House changes passed 28 to 0.
SB76 passed the House last week in a 101 to 0 vote.
SB76 now goes to the Governor for her consideration.
SB76 was inspired by young mothers who were forced to perform jury duty in a court in Jefferson County. The Judge then threatened to phone DHR if they brought their babies back to court.
The Alabama Supreme Court has already passed a rule allowing nursing mothers to ask for and be exempted from jury duty. SB76 incorporates the new rule into state law.
