June 24, 2025 - HOMEWOOD, AL - An 18-year-old from Aliceville, Alabama was shot and killed by a Homewood police officer Monday night following a physical altercation at Homewood Soccer Park, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on June 23, when a Homewood Police Department officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked near the soccer fields on South Lakeshore Drive. According to a statement released by the department, the officer approached the vehicle and encountered a male occupant who allegedly became combative.
During the confrontation, the individual-identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as Jabari Latrell Peoples-reportedly engaged in a physical struggle with the officer and then produced a handgun. At that point, the officer discharged their weapon, striking Peoples.
Emergency medical personnel treated both the officer and Peoples at the scene. The officer was released shortly afterward, while Peoples was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m..
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has taken over the investigation, as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings. No further details have been released regarding the number of shots fired, the identity of the officer involved, or whether body camera footage exists.
The Homewood Police Department has not commented on the officer's current duty status, and ALEA has stated that additional information will be released pending the outcome of their investigation.
Peoples' death has sparked concern among community members, particularly in Aliceville, where he was a recent high school graduate. Family members have not yet issued a public statement.
