June 10, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Alabama) joined National Report on Newsmax. Britt warned of the ramifications of congressional inaction on the economy and the lives of ordinary Americans if Congress does not come together to pass a bill keeping the government funding and renewing the current federal income tax rates before they automatically expire next month.
The House has already passed the first version of "The Big Beautiful Bill." The widely criticized first draft of the bill is now before the U.S. Senate.
"We are working through this on the Senate side, we are doing our job," Senator Britt told Newsmax. "We understand what's at stake. If we don't get this bill across the finish line. That means a $4 trillion tax hike on Americans from coast to coast. That means that in my home state of Alabama, everyone's tax bill goes up over $2,000 on average. Look, we want hardworking Americans to keep more of their money. That is what this is about."
The House version of the bill enacted President Donald J. Trump's (R) budget priorities like border security and immigration enforcement efforts. It also implemented the renewal of the tax cuts; but did not include any significant budget cuts. The Senate is looking to cut spending without negatively impacting millions of families.
"It's also about reining in spending and making sure that we have a pathway to sustainability here in this nation," said Senator Britt. "When you look at (entitlement) programs for people, we want to assure (people) that we preserve and strengthen those. So, we are taking a surgical approach here on the Senate side. We are rolling up our sleeves and we are doing the work. We're doing the work for the American people and to put President Trump's vision into reality."
The White House warns that if Congress doesn't extend the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts, Americans will be stuck with the largest tax hike in history. The average taxpayer will see a 22% tax hike ($4 trillion). The average family of four will see a $1,700 tax hike. The Child Tax Credit will be cut in half for 40 million families. Nearly every taxpayer will see their guaranteed deduction slashed in half. 26 million small businesses will be saddled with a massive tax increase.
Millions of families will struggle to pay their bills at the end of the month after the taxes taken out of their checks suddenly rises while their take home pay plumets.
The macro-economy effects of increasing tax rates suddenly across the board are difficult to predict; but there is a strong likelihood that the double impact of less money in the hands of consumers and corporations passing off their higher tax rates on consumers could force the economy into recession.
Senator Britt was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022.
