July 2, 2025 - BIRMINGHAM, AL - The World Police and Fire games are currently being held in Birmingham, Alabama. With the Olympic-style competition featuring thousands of first-responders from various countries around the world. And the games welcoming spectators with free admission to all events, except for the K-9 Explosives Detection competition and the K-9 Narcotics Detection competitions which are closed to the public. The games began on June 27th and are set to continue over The Fourth of July weekend with the final closing ceremony being held on July 06th, 2025.
At present the USA is leading the gold medal count in the World Police and Fire Games with 119 medals and 304 medals, total. India is currently in second place in the total number of gold medals with 57 gold medals to their credit. However, Brazil is currently in second place in the total of number of medals with 138 total medals to their credit, 51 of which are gold.
The World Police and Fire Games are modeled after the original California Police Games. With the first World Police and Fire Games being held in 1985 in San Jose, California. The next host city for the games is scheduled to be Perth in Australia. And to be an athlete in the World Police and Fire Games, competitors must be active or retired members of law enforcement in good standing with their respective agencies.
This year, the World Police and Fire Games features 7,500 first responders from 72 countries. With an estimated 700 of the athletes being from Sweet Home Alabama.
