July 30, 2025 - TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama football team opened its summer practice sessions Wednesday morning, marking the first official step in its 2025 campaign under second-year head coach Kalen DeBoer. With expectations high and a roster brimming with both seasoned talent and promising newcomers, the Crimson Tide took to the field with intensity and focus, setting the tone for what could be a pivotal season in the program's evolution.
The early morning practice, held under the sweltering Alabama sun, was more than just a conditioning session-it was a statement. DeBoer, known for his meticulous preparation and player-first philosophy, addressed the media following the workout, emphasizing the importance of sustaining energy and discipline throughout the season.
"There should be all the energy at a high level, and we've had that," DeBoer said. "The question I keep asking them-it's about the season, it's a practice, it's a play-can they sustain it?"
Leadership and Recovery
Among the most closely watched players was linebacker Deontae Lawson, whose leadership and recovery from injury have been central to Alabama's defensive strategy. Lawson participated in limited reps, as expected, with DeBoer noting that his trajectory is "going up."
"His leadership is the thing," DeBoer said. "Mentally and physically, I think he's in a really good spot, but there's still progress to be made."
Wide receiver Jalen Hale also returned to the field after a significant injury in spring 2024. His presence was met with enthusiasm from teammates and staff alike. Though Hale is still working through missed reps, DeBoer expressed confidence in his growth and potential impact this fall.
Position Battles and Depth
While the team practiced in spider pads and helmets-limiting full-contact evaluations-early signs pointed to a balanced roster. DeBoer highlighted the defensive backfield as a standout group, though he cautioned that physicality assessments would come later in camp.
"It didn't feel like one position completely dominated another," he said. "I thought it was good balance across the board."
The quarterback room remains a focal point, especially with the departure of Jalen Milroe to the NFL. Sophomore Julian Sayin, redshirt freshman Austin Mack, and transfer QB Malik Hornsby are all vying for the starting role. Sayin, a former five-star recruit, showed poise during drills, while Hornsby's mobility added a dynamic edge to the offense.
Fresh Faces and Veteran Presence
Alabama's 2025 recruiting class, ranked among the top five nationally, was well-represented on day one. Freshman edge rusher Zion Grady and cornerback Zay Mincey turned heads with their athleticism and quick adaptation to the pace of college football.
Meanwhile, veterans like offensive lineman Tyler Booker and safety Malachi Moore provided stability and mentorship. Booker, now entering his junior season, anchored the offensive line with authority, while Moore's communication in the secondary kept younger players aligned.
Coaching Continuity and Adjustments
DeBoer's staff, largely retained from last season, brings continuity to the program. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack are both entering their second year in Tuscaloosa, and their systems are now fully embedded.
Grubb's offense emphasized tempo and spacing during the first practice, with receivers running crisp routes and backs rotating through zone-read packages. Wommack's defense, meanwhile, focused on alignment and pursuit angles, laying the groundwork for more aggressive schemes later in camp.
Looking Ahead
The Crimson Tide will continue summer practices over the next several weeks, culminating in a closed scrimmage before fall camp officially begins. The team's first game is scheduled for August 31 against Western Kentucky, a matchup that will offer fans their first glimpse of the new-look Tide.
For DeBoer, the goal is clear: build a team that can compete at the highest level while fostering growth and resilience.
"These guys were determined from the beginning," he said. "That's been the challenge-to sustain that intensity from start to finish."
As the sun rose over Bryant-Denny Stadium, the echoes of whistles and cleats marked the beginning of a new chapter. Alabama football is back, and the journey to reclaim national dominance has officially begun.
