Gamecocks Open Fall Camp Under Charles Kelly with Energy and High Expectations

August 2, 2025 - JACKSONVILLE, AL. - Jacksonville State University kicked off its 2025 fall football camp on July 29 with a fresh face at the helm and a championship mindset. First-year head coach Charles Kelly returned to his alma mater 25 seasons after his last practice as a player, now leading the Gamecocks into a new era following their Conference USA title run in 2024.

"I try to focus on the job I've got to do and getting the guys ready," Kelly said. "I haven't had time to reflect. It's about getting better every day."

Roster Overhaul: Blending Old and New

The Gamecocks return 47 scholarship players from last year's championship squad, but Kelly and his staff have added 51 new scholarship athletes to reshape the roster. The infusion of talent has created fierce competition across all position groups, and the coaching staff has emphasized efficiency and reps to accelerate development.

Kelly's "two-spot" practice format-essentially running simultaneous drills with two groups-has allowed for maximum reps, especially at quarterback and skill positions.

"You've got to get a lot of reps, do a lot of things," Kelly said. "Efficiency in practice is key."

Quarterback Room: Depth and Development

While no starter has been named, early practices have focused on building timing and decision-making. The two-spot format has helped quarterbacks get more live reps, and Kelly has praised their progress through the first few sessions.

Veteran leadership and new faces are both in the mix, and the staff is expected to narrow the depth chart by mid-August.

Offensive Line: Youthful Grit

The offensive line is one of the youngest units on the team, but Kelly has already seen signs of cohesion and toughness. During the second day of camp, the run game showed flashes of power, and the pass protection held up well against a fast defensive front.

"They're a young group, but you can see them coming together," Kelly said.

Wide Receivers: Veteran Anchors

The most experienced unit on offense is the receiving corps, led by seniors Michael Pettway and Brock Rechsteiner. Both have been vocal leaders and consistent performers in early practices, helping younger receivers adjust to the pace and precision required at the collegiate level.

"They understand what it takes to play," Kelly said. "They've been very good leaders."

Defense: Fast Start and Turnover Focus

The defensive front has been disruptive, with a strong pass rush and disciplined run fits. Kelly noted that several corners stood out during the second practice, and the defense forced multiple turnovers during padded sessions.

The staff has emphasized situational awareness and communication, and the early returns suggest the defense could be a strength heading into the season.

Practice Format: Lightning, Intensity, and Adaptability

The first practice was cut short due to lightning in the area, but the team bounced back with a high-energy second session. Hydration, recovery, and mental preparation have been focal points, especially with the Alabama heat and humidity.

"Our guys came out ready to practice," Kelly said. "They did a good job preparing themselves."

Culture Shift: Accountability and Intentionality

Kelly has brought a no-nonsense approach to camp, stressing expectations and demanding execution. His staff has worked quickly to align players with the new system, and the early practices have reflected a team eager to learn and compete.

"You give people expectations, and then demand it," Kelly said. "Our coaches and players have done a good job of learning what to do."

Looking Ahead: Building Toward the Season Opener

Jacksonville State will continue its fall camp schedule at AmFirst Stadium as the team prepares for its 2025 season opener. With a revamped roster, a championship pedigree, and a head coach who knows the program inside and out, the Gamecocks are aiming to defend their Conference USA crown-and they're doing it with urgency, grit, and a renewed sense of purpose.
