Tuberville wins college football national championship 20 years after the fact

August 19, 2025 – AUBURN, AL – Auburn officials announced that they were claiming an additional seven football titles, including the 2004 team that was coached by Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville – now the senior U.S. Senator from Alabama. Tuberville welcomed the belated recognition of his best team's greatness.

"There is no doubt in my mind: the 2004 Auburn Tigers were the best team in college football," said Sen. Tuberville. "The players, coaches, and fans deserve to be recognized as the National Champions. War Eagle!"

Senator/Coach Tuberville released a statement to Facebook.

"Hello, Coach Tommy Tuberville here To celebrate the great news that we have been waiting for for 21 years," said Tuberville. "I want to congratulate the 2004 Auburn Tigers football team on being recognized as the true national champion of college football in 2004. There is no doubt that the 2004 Auburn team was the best team in the country for the entire season. We went undefeated and had four wins over top ten teams. Not only were our players great athletes but they were great young men. They were unselfish and they played for each other. Some players had the opportunity to go to the NFL after the 2003 season; but returned for their senior season because they loved their team and they loved Auburn. And that's why they were so successful. This team is finally getting the recognition they deserve."

The 2004 team won the Southeastern Conference Championship game after going undefeated in the regular season. The 2004 team predated the four team playoff or certainly would have gotten an invitation to play for the national title as they were ranked #3 in the BCS rankings after the SEC CG. Instead of advancing the undefeated SEC Champion, the BCS committee elected to ignore the Auburn team; but instead placed the Big 12 champion Oklahoma Sooners and the PAC 10 Champion University of Southern California Trojans in the national championship game. Auburn played the Atlantic Coast Conference Champion Virginia Tech Hokies (10 and 2) in the Sugar Bowl. Auburn won the game 16 to 13 in a defensive battle. Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell was named the MVP. Meanwhile the supposed National Championship Game in the Orange Bowl was a one-sided affair with USC trouncing Oklahoma 55 to 19. The BCS Committee and the Associated Press both awarded their trophy to USC. Eventually an NCAA investigation revealed that USC running back Reggie Bush and his family were living in a luxury condo provided by a sports agent. This was a major NCAA violation at the time so USC had to surrender both its national title and all of its wins. Coach Pete Carroll went to the NFL to avoid severe personal sanctions. Instead of awarding the championship to the Tigers, the 2004 national championship is blank in official NCAA records.

The Auburn Athletics Department, repeating something Alabama did two decades ago, claimed this and six other titles including 1993 and 1958. It is not clear if Auburn plans on purchasing national title rings for the surviving members of those squads.

Tuberville would go on to Coach Texas Tech and Cincinnati before becoming a sports successful broadcaster. Eventually the former coach, educator, and broadcaster entered politics successfully uu-seating incumbent Senator Doug Jones (D-Alabama) in 2020. Now "Coach" is setting his sights on the Governor's mansion.

Tuberville faces Ken McFeeters in the Republican primary on May 19, 2026. Pastor Will Boyd and Chad "Chig" Martin are running for the Democratic nomination.
