September 29, 2025 – JASPER, AL – Republican voters in Alabama's House District 13 will head to the polls Tuesday, September 30, for a special Republican primary election to fill the seat vacated earlier this year by Matt Woods's election to the Alabama Senate. The race has drawn attention across Walker and Winston counties, where local issues and party dynamics are shaping a closely watched contest.
Why the Election Matters
House District 13 has long been a Republican stronghold. Democrats have not been competitive in recent elections in HD13.
The GOP candidates are: Greg Barnes and Dustin Beaty.
The winner will serve the remainder of the current legislative term and could influence key votes on education funding, rural healthcare, and infrastructure priorities. The ultimate winner will face re-election next year
Who's Running
The candidates certified for the special primary include:
Greg Barnes – "I am running for House District 13 because we deserve honest, conservative leadership. I am not a politician; I am a regular citizen and businessman who will serve our district with commitment and integrity."
Barnes is emphasizing his Christian worldview. Barnes is endorsed by the Walker County Farmers Federation.
Dustin Beaty is emphasizing his business experience and is promising to bring more jobs to the district.
Beaty - "Too many of our sons and daughters are leaving Walker County for jobs elsewhere. Together we can put a stop to that. Walker County has so much potential. I know we can recruit more good paying jobs to Walker County and keep our young people here. That's my commitment to you."
Mike Elliott has withdrawn from the race meaning that there will be need for a runoff.
There is no Democratic nominee that we are aware of and no independent or write-in candidate that we are aware of.
The general election is scheduled for January 13, 2026; but if there is no Democratic or independent candidate then there will be no need for a general election so it is likely that the winner of the GOP primary will be certified as the winners as soon as the primary election results are certified.
