September 23, 2025 – MOBILE, AL – Spiro Cheriogotis narrowly edged out State Representative Barbara Drummond to become the next Mayor of Mobile.
Incumbent Mayor Sandy Stimpson had decided not to run again. He endorsed Cheriogotis over a half a dozen contenders. Stimpson said that Cheriogotis – a former Judge – would be the best person to lead Mobile forward.
"From the very beginning, we said that this will be a campaign for Mobilians run by Mobilians," said Chariogotis in his victory speech. "Tonight, the people of mobile have spoken."
"This victory belongs to everyone in this room," Cheriogotis continued. "The hundreds of volunteers that got out on the streets and got after it. It came down to every last one of you, thank you, thank you," said Cheriogotis. "All of the barbecue butts that were cooked. It was a team effort and you are looking at the team."
Cheriogotis received 24,005 votes (50.8%). Rep. Drummond got 23,285 votes (49.2%.) At this point it appears that there will not be an automatic recount.
Drummond's campaign had drawn a lot of state and national attention. The Alabama Education Association (AEA) had contributed over $200,000 to Drummond. House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels' Alabama Works PAC also donated heavily to Drummond. Drummond was endorsed by the Montgomery based Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
Mobile is the second largest city in Alabama with 201,367 people – trailing only Huntsville with 230,402.
The city is known for its strong manufacturing base with Airbus building commercial jets there and Austal building ships for the U.S. Navy.
