October 5, 2025 - As the highest-grossing live-music artist, one of the wealthiest female musicians, and one of the best-selling music artists of all time, it seems like pop artist, Taylor Swift, has the magic touch when it comes to show business. And, in fact, her movie entitled, "The Life of a Showgirl" opened at number one over the weekend. With the total sales for movie tickets coming in at 33 million. The movie coincided with the release of Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, which also had a #1 debut. As it topped both the Forbes Apple Music charts and the ABC7 New York Billboard 200 music chart. Having both a number one movie and a number one music album on the same weekend is a rare feat. With the first woman to ever do so being Jennifer Lopez in 2001 with her album "J.Lo" and her movie, "The Wedding Planner".
The highly anticipated movie featuring The Rock, "The Smashing Machine" opened at third place over the weekend. With its opening weekend earnings being less than one-fifth of the new Taylor Swift movie. Since it brought in only $6 million in ticket receipts compared to her $33 million. However, Taylor Swift's previous film, "The Eras Tour" from two years ago had an opening weekend of $96 million.
One of the features of the new Taylor Swift movie is a music video based on a character from Shakespeare's, "Hamlet". As Taylor Swift does a very sensuous portrayal of Ophelia in her music video, "The Fate of Ophelia". Which may raise some questions as to her relationship with her fiancé, the football player, Travis Kelce. As in the Shakespeare play, Ophelia is warned by her father and brother to have naught to do with Prince Hamlet due to their concerns that he is insincere. And, in fact, Hamlet kills Ophelia's father before the end of the play, which leads Ophelia to go crazy and accidentally drown. Noticeably in Taylor Swift's, "The Fate of Ophelia", the supporting female cast members are markedly less attractive in the face than the 35 year old statuesque Taylor.
While Taylor Swift first gained fame at the age of 16 with her debut album, "Tim McGraw", over the years as her music becomes more edgy, some Christians have raised concerns about the risqué nature of her pop music. Raised a Christian with a Presbyterian background, Taylor Swift went to a Catholic run Montessori school run by the Bernardine Sisters of St. Francis for kindergarten and preschool. However, in her documentary, "Miss Americana" she seems to have a more liberal view of Christian doctrine than most evangelical conservative Christians with her promotion of "tolerance". The bulk of her fans, known as "Swifties", are between the ages of 18 and 42. With some surveys showing that 45% of her U.S. fan base are Millennials.
"The Life of a Showgirl" has a running time of 89 minutes and is rated PG. However, eight of the twelve songs on the music album by the same name are labeled as explicit due to strong language and vulgarities.
