OBITUARY: Martha Simmons

Dr. Martha Poole Simmons, age 87 a resident of Montgomery, AL, expired on Saturday October 4, 2025 at UAB in Birmingham, AL after an extended illness.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday October 20, 2025 at Frazer Church, Montgomery, AL. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM to 11:30AM and the Memorial Service will begin at 11:30AM.

Dr. Simmons was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Janie Poole, of Wetumpka, AL. She is survived by two sons, Richard E. Simmons and his wife, Laura M. Simmons, grandson, Alexander Simmons and his wife, Anne Grace, granddaughter, Sarah Kate Simmons, son, Col. Steven A. Simmons and his wife, Laura C. Simmons and twin grandsons, Alden Simmons, and William Simmons.

She was a graduate of the University of AL receiving her B.S. Degree in 1959 and her Ph.D. in 1980 in Elementary Education and her Master of Science in Elementary Education from Troy State University in 1976. She served as a teacher for 32 years in elementary schools and at the university level where she was a professor of Elementary Education at Belmont University, Huntingdon College and AL State University.

She was an active volunteer in many areas of service including disaster relief with the Central-East AL Chapter of the American Red Cross serving across the USA, with the Montgomery Baptist South Medical Center in surgery waiting, with the Montgomery Salvation Army Angel Tree project, at Frazer Church in Montgomery, with the Crump Senior Center of Montgomery and with the Centra Alabama Veterans Healthcare System Outpatient Clinic. She was also a volunteer reporter and writer about veterans for the Alabama Gazette. She was a member of the William Bibb Chapter and the Peter Forney Chapter of the DAR. She was a member of Alpha Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and served as an officer in the AL organization
