October 16, 2025 - CULLMAN, AL - In a bold move that could reshape the political landscape of North Alabama, the Alabama Cannabis Coalition has officially endorsed JR Bowling in his bid for State Senate District 4, citing his unwavering support for cannabis reform and free-market hemp policies.
The endorsement comes after more than a decade of grassroots advocacy by the Coalition, which has fought to expand legal access to cannabis and protect Alabama's hemp industry. H. Marty Schelper, founder of the Alabama Cannabis Coalition and president of Alabama Republicans Against Marijuana Prohibition, praised Bowling's leadership as "courageous and principled."
"JR Bowling represents the kind of leadership Alabama desperately needs - a leader who listens to the people, respects science, and stands up for personal freedom and the free market," Schelper said.
The Coalition's announcement draws a sharp contrast between Bowling and incumbent State Senator Garlan Gudger Jr., who voted in favor of HB445 earlier this year. That legislation, according to critics, dismantled Alabama's federally legal hemp industry, which had flourished under the 2018 Farm Bill. Advocates say the bill devastated small businesses, farmers, and consumers, and undermined economic opportunity and individual liberty.
"It's long past time for the citizens of Alabama to have representation that truly listens to their voices," Schelper added. "We must end the reefer madness and the outdated political games that continue to punish citizens for accessing a natural plant that heals and sustains lives."
The Coalition's endorsement signals a growing shift in Alabama's political dialogue around cannabis and hemp, especially in rural and agricultural communities where hemp farming had become a viable economic option. With the 2026 legislative session on the horizon, Bowling's campaign is expected to focus heavily on restoring hemp protections and expanding medical cannabis access.
Both the Alabama Cannabis Coalition and Alabama Republicans Against Marijuana Prohibition have pledged to support Bowling's campaign through outreach, education, and voter mobilization efforts
"Alabama deserves better - and JR Bowling embodies that better future," Schelper said.
As the race for District 4 intensifies, cannabis policy may emerge as a defining issue for voters seeking reform, economic revitalization, and personal freedom.
The Republican primary is May 19, 2026.
