BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Saturday morning, October 4, in downtown Birmingham. The incident took place around 3:40 a.m. in the 400 block of 2nd Avenue North, where a Birmingham Police Department officer-working an approved off-duty security job-encountered an armed individual during an altercation.
According to ALEA's preliminary report, the confrontation began between two individuals when 51-year-old Quantez O. Johnson allegedly pulled out a firearm. The uniformed officer issued verbal commands for Johnson to drop the weapon. When Johnson failed to comply, the officer discharged his firearm, striking Johnson. No other injuries were reported, and the officer was not harmed during the incident.
Johnson was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released details about his current condition. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation, a division of ALEA, is leading the inquiry and will submit its findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office upon completion.
This incident adds to ongoing discussions about law enforcement protocols, use-of-force standards, and public safety in urban areas. Community leaders and legal experts are expected to monitor the investigation closely as more details emerge.
