Governor Ivey Breaks Ground on New Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences
October 14, 2025 - DEMOPOLIS, AL - On Tuesday, the city of Demopolis became the focal point of educational and healthcare advancement as Governor Kay Ivey (R), flanked by state and national leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, philanthropists, and local officials, broke ground on the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences (ASHS). This groundbreaking event, held at the 10-acre campus site at 908 S. Cedar Avenue, represents a significant stride in addressing both the educational and workforce needs of rural West Alabama, while also marking a broader milestone for the state.
Governor Ivey, a steadfast advocate for education and rural development, has been instrumental in the creation of ASHS, working diligently with the Legislature to ensure the school's establishment and its chosen location in Alabama's storied Black Belt. "This school represents more than bricks and mortar," declared Governor Ivey at the ceremony. "It is fresh potential for our young people and a milestone in addressing healthcare needs here in Alabama." Her remarks underscored ASHS's dual purpose: empowering students and strengthening healthcare delivery in underserved communities.
Also in attendance was U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, who praised the initiative for its transformative impact on rural Alabama. Representative Sewell stated, "The establishment of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences is a game-changer for our region. It will not only provide world-class educational opportunities for our youth but also ensure that our communities have access to a new generation of skilled healthcare professionals." Sewell emphasized the importance of investing in both education and workforce development to secure the future health and prosperity of the Black Belt and beyond.
The ceremony drew notable figures from across Alabama and beyond, including members of the Alabama federal government delegation, local and state stakeholders, and special guests such as Kate Herman of Bloomberg Philanthropies. Bloomberg Philanthropies' substantial commitment-$26.4 million as part of its nationwide $250 million initiative to launch healthcare-focused career and technical education (CTE) high schools-demonstrates the national significance of ASHS. The Alabama school is one of only ten schools selected for this initiative and stands out as the only one being built entirely from the ground up.
Howard Wolfson, Education Lead for Bloomberg Philanthropies, emphasized the transformative potential of ASHS. "We are proud to support the bold vision of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences," he stated. "By giving students access to high quality instruction and clear career pathways, ASHS will help ensure that the next generation of healthcare professionals is well equipped to meet the demands of communities across the state and the country." This vision is particularly crucial in a time of growing demand for skilled healthcare workers, especially in rural and underserved regions.
The groundbreaking event was further energized by the surprise announcement that Demopolis native Dr. Selwyn Vickers, M.D., FACS, would serve as Special Advisor to ASHS and its supporting Foundation. Dr. Vickers brings a wealth of experience and prestige, currently serving as president and CEO of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in New York-one of the world's leading cancer centers. His involvement bridges local roots with national expertise, promising to guide ASHS in shaping a curriculum and culture that meets both local needs and global standards.
Dr. James "Jimmy" Martin, president of ASHS, articulated the school's mission during the ceremony, highlighting the broader impact the school aims to have. "As we take this step forward, we're building opportunity, both for young people and for the future of healthcare in Alabama," Martin said. "Our mission is to help students discover purpose in service, connect learning to real careers and strengthen the health of every community in our state." This mission is reflected in the school's innovative approach to education, focusing on hands-on training, industry-recognized certifications, and seamless pathways to both higher education and immediate careers in healthcare.
ASHS will function as a residential campus, drawing students from across Alabama and immersing them in a community dedicated to healthcare excellence. It will become the fourth free, state-supported residential specialty school under the Alabama State Department of Education, joining esteemed programs focused on fine arts, math/science, and cyber technology/engineering. The school's residential model is designed to foster a collaborative, immersive learning environment, where students live and learn together, building the skills and relationships necessary for future success.
The school's strategic location next to Whitfield Regional Hospital, its primary medical partner, will allow students unparalleled access to real-world clinical experiences and mentorship. This proximity to a functioning healthcare facility will ensure that classroom learning is closely tied to practical application, a hallmark of the school's philosophy. Additionally, the involvement of leading construction firm Brasfield & Gorrie as general contractor and Caldwell Architects for design reflects a commitment to building state-of-the-art facilities that can support advanced teaching and learning.
ASHS stands out in the national landscape of healthcare education initiatives as the only school in Bloomberg Philanthropies' 10-school partnership to be built entirely from scratch. This unique opportunity allows the school to be purpose-built for modern healthcare education, incorporating cutting-edge technology, flexible learning spaces, and the infrastructure needed for simulation labs, collaborative projects, and advanced instruction.
The timeline for ASHS's opening underscores the state's commitment to expediency and excellence. The school is scheduled to open its doors to its inaugural freshman class in August 2026, utilizing a temporary campus on the grounds of the University of West Alabama in Livingston. While construction continues in Demopolis towards an August 2027 completion, students will already be benefiting from the ASHS experience-living, learning, and training together in a residential setting designed to prepare them for immediate entry into healthcare careers or further education.
Looking ahead, the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences promises to be a transformative force for both its students and the communities they will serve. By providing access to high-quality education, hands-on training, and real career pathways, ASHS is poised to address critical shortages in the healthcare workforce, elevate opportunities for rural youth, and contribute to the overall health and prosperity of Alabama. The collaboration among state leaders, philanthropic organizations, and local stakeholders is a testament to the shared belief that investing in education and healthcare today will yield lasting benefits for generations to come.
As construction begins and the vision for ASHS takes shape, the excitement and optimism are palpable-not only among those directly involved but also within the broader community. The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences stands as a beacon of hope and progress, demonstrating what can be achieved when commitment, collaboration, and innovation converge in service of a brighter future.
