The people's voice of reason
WOW! Can you believe another twelve months have come and gone? Happy New Year! In December 2017, my husband, Brian, and I had the awesome opportunity to attend a leadership conference at our church. Dr. John Maxwell was the speaker. During the course of his talk, Dr. Maxwell made mention of his end of year and beginning of year routine…. instead of making New Year’s resolutions, he picks just one word.
“Oh that my ways would be established on order to keep you word.” Psalm 119:5
Brian and I thought it was a great idea! After all, if you’re like most people, each January goes something like this: You choose a problematic behavior that has plagued you for years and vow to reverse it. In fact, you can probably think of two or three undesirable habits…make that four or five. Then, begins the litany of imperfections to be perfected commonly known as “New Year’s Resolutions.” All of which are typically off your radar by February. “My One Word” is an experiment designed to move you beyond this cycle. The challenge is simple: lose the long list of changes you want to make this year and instead pick ONE WORD. This process provides clarity by taking all your big plans for life change and narrowing them down into a single focus. Just one word that centers on your character and creates a vision for your future.
The book “My One Word” by Mike Ashcraft and Rachel Olsen helps you find lasting change by spending an entire year focusing on just one word that represents what you most hope God will do in you. If you are interested, I encourage you to check out the website, http://www.myoneword.org.
As I mentioned in an article several months ago, Brian and I lead a Small Group this past Summer using this very book and concept. We, also, just wrapped up the Fall Small Group Semester of “My One Word”. What a blessing it is to have opportunities to share and grow with other believers!
So, I invite you to join us and pick one word for the next twelve months. After all, wouldn’t it be great to do something about one thing this year instead of nothing about everything?!?!
Many Blessings!
