Martha Poole Simmons inducted into Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame

On Sunday, August 20, 2024 veteran Alabama Gazette writer Martha Poole Simmons was formally inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. Simmons was nominated by Carver D.K. Papke. Simmons lives in Montgomery.

From the 2024 Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony program, "Martha Poole Simmons serves Armed Forces veterans through the American Red Cross and by writing articles for the Alabama Gazette. Simmons has presented at meetings for the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 607, the Townsend Detachment 920 U.S. Marine Corps, the American Legion Post 2, and the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars Smith-Wynn Post 2. She also provides Totes of Hope hygiene items.

From December 2016 – September 2022, she volunteered at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care Outpatient Clinic. Simmons greeted veterans and assisted them in locating their treatment areas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she organized house drive-by parades for nonagenarian and centenarian veterans Simmons also served as a volunteer at the Crump Senior Center. As President of the Friends of the Crump Center, she led in fundraising to purchase needed items for a new property. She worked to obtain a grant totaling $25,478,77. The Crump Senior Center, located in Montgomery, provides programs specifically for senior adults. These programs include: meals, exercise, games, tax assistance, and other services. Simmons served as coordinator of weekly bridge sessions from November 2013 – September 2022."
