One dead and 16 wounded during mass shooting in Tuskegee

November 14, 2024 – MONTGOMERY, AL – Members of the Alabama House Democratic Caucus expressed their shock and sorrow in the aftermath of violence in Tuskegee that left one dead and sixteen injured.

Rep. Pebblin Warren (D-Tuskegee) represents Macon County.

"My heart is heavy with grief and sadness for those killed, injured, and forever traumatized by this senseless and horrific tragedy," said Rep. Warren in a statement. Shootings like this have become all too common in Alabama. As a member of the Board of Trustees for Tuskegee University, I know how devastating and hurtful this tragedy is for our students, faculty, and our entire community. Several of my colleagues, such as Sen. Stewart, Rep. Moore, and Rep. Hollis, have roots in Tuskegee and join me in expressing our sorrow, outrage, and pain. I pray that we can begin the process of healing and emerge stronger as a united and loving community."

Rep. Rolanda Hollis (D-Birmingham) represents Birmingham; but is a graduate of Tuskegee University.

"As a proud graduate of Tuskegee University this hurts me personally," said Rep. Hollis. "But I know the Tuskegee community is caring and strong and we will not be defeated by senseless gun violence. We will grieve and we will persevere, but we must take meaningful action now."

House Democrats have already prefiled several bills restricting the availability of guns in Alabama. House Democrats are holding a press conference at the State House on Friday.

"Our Democratic House Caucus members will continue to support legislation, such as Rep. Ensler's bill to ban illegal gun modifications, like the "Glock switch", at the state level to make it easier to prosecute those who possess or use these devices," said Hollis. "Of course, we believe there are other common sense measures that we can take and we will discuss those in detail at this press conference."

The attack occurred in the early morning hours Sunday on the campus of Tuskegee University as students were celebrating homecoming weekend.

18-year-old La'Tavion Johnson has been identified as the man that was killed.

25 year old Jaquez Myrick has been arrested and charged with possession of a machine gun. He was arrested leaving the scene of the slaying.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident at the request of the Macon County Sheriff's Office.

Several of the injured are students of Tuskegee University.
