Gov. Ivey signs the Speedy Trial Act into law

May 14, 2025 - MONTGOMERY, AL - Alabama Governor Kay Ivey (R) on Tuesday signed House Bill 307 - the Speedy Trial Act - into law. The bill was sponsored by State Senator Will Barfoot (R-Pike Road) and carried in the House by State Representative Jim Hill (R-Odenville). SB307 expedites trials for violent criminal cases, reduces backlogs and ensures swift justice for victims. Attorney General Steve Marshall, Chief Justice Sarah Stewart and Senator Will Barfoot joined the governor in her office as she officially made it law.

"Going into this legislative session, I stated bolstering public safety would be my number one priority, and certainly, the Speedy Trial Act will be an important measure to accomplishing a Safe Alabama. In Alabama, we enforce the law, and I look forward to justice being served beginning with Aniah Blanchard's case," said Gov. Kay Ivey. "Thank you to our bill sponsors, Senator Barfoot and Representative Hill, as well as Attorney General Marshall and Chief Justice Stewart, for their work on this public safety effort."

The governor said that she looks forward to the remaining bills in her Safe Alabama public safety package to be sent to her desk when the Legislature returns Wednesday so she can swiftly sign them into law.

The Governor's bill giving law enforcement officers civil and criminal immunity as long as they are not acting recklessly and are in the performance of their duties has passed the House; but has stalled in the Senate due to mindless partisan delay tactics by some Senators in the minority.

Wednesday will be the final day of the 2025 Alabama Regular Legislative Session.
