The GAO released a report recommending that SPACECOM HQ should be in Alabama

May, 29, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report that validated the multiple Air Force recommendations that United States Space Command (SPACECOM) headquarters should be located in Huntsville, AL.

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL03) released a statement the released of the GAO report.

"The GAO report yet again affirms that Huntsville is the best option for Space Command's headquarters," said Congressman Rogers. "When making his decision to locate the combatant command headquarters in Huntsville, President Trump prioritized transparency, national security, and a commitment to saving taxpayer dollars. Multiple GAO reports and the recent Inspector General's report have validated this."

The Air Force originally awarded Space Command to Huntsville in 2021. President Joseph R. Biden (D) overruled the Air Force. The Alabama Congressional Delegation accused Biden of doing so for political reasons. Alabama, Nebraska, and Texas all finished ahead of Colorado in the Air Force analysis; but all three are red states that did not vote for Biden to be President. Alabama has two Republican Senators and has not voted for a Democratic Party nominee for President since 1976. Colorado on the other hand has two Democratic Senators and has voted for Kamila Harris, Hillary Clinton, and Barack H. Obama (twice).

"President Biden ignored multiple Air Force analyses and put his political ambitions above the welfare of the American people when he made the decision to put the headquarters in Colorado Springs," said Chairman Rogers. "President Biden cited "military readiness" to justify his choice, but we now know his own administration officials repeatedly told him that Huntsville was the best location, and "military readiness" concerns were fictional."

The Alabama Congressional Delegation is working to undo the decision by President Biden and get SPACECOM relocated to Alabama.

"This blatant interference and politization of a critical decision on national security would cost the taxpayer over $420,000,000," said Rogers. "The contrast could not be clearer. President Trump chose the best location for SPACECOM headquarters. I look forward to working with the Trump Administration to rectify yet another one of Biden's national security blunders."

The GAO report follows an April 2025 report by the Department of Defense Inspector General, which validated the Air Force's recommendations to locate SPACECOM headquarters at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.
