June `9, 2025 - BIRMINGHAM, AL - State Senator Merika Coleman (D-Pleasant Grove) is proud to announce that she has successfully secured an additional $325,000 in the 2025–2026 Alabama State Budgets to support Phase 2 of the Willie Mays Park rehabilitation project in Fairfield. This latest investment builds on her previously announced $50,000 Jefferson County Community Service grant and reflects her continued commitment to honoring the legacy of Alabama native and baseball icon, Willie Mays.
"Willie Mays Park is more than just a ballfield - it is a beacon of history, pride, and potential for Fairfield and the surrounding community," said Senator Coleman. "This additional $325,000 will help us bring the next phase of our vision to life - one that invests in our youth, revitalizes our neighborhoods, and keeps the spirit of Willie Mays alive for generations to come."
Phase 2 of the rehabilitation will include additional infrastructure, expanded recreational facilities, and community-driven enhancements that reflect the park's historical and cultural significance.
As part of this historic week of celebration, Senator Coleman is also honored to host the 2025 Baseball Champions - the Fairfield Mighty Tigers 6U Team - as her special guests at today's East-West Classic Game at Rickwood Field. Their attendance serves as a powerful symbol of the legacy of Willie Mays and the enduring spirit of youth baseball in Fairfield.
"Having these young champions from my district join us for this national celebration is exactly what this project is about - lifting up the next generation while honoring the trailblazers who paved the way," said Senator Coleman.
Willie Mays, who passed away in 2024, was born and raised in Fairfield and remains one of the most influential figures in American sports history. The renovation of the park that bears his name is a cornerstone of Major League Baseball's 2025 East-West Classic Juneteenth celebration, bringing national attention to Fairfield's historic role in Black baseball and civil rights.
Senator Coleman has been instrumental in building a broad coalition of support for the park's revitalization - including Major League Baseball, the City of Fairfield, and numerous civic and philanthropic partners.
"The story of Willie Mays began right here in Fairfield. This continued investment ensures that the next great story can begin here too," said Senator Coleman.
