June 14, 2025 - Two Democratic State Legislators were shot in their separate homes.
State Representative Melissa Hortman has died along with her husband, Mark.
Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz (D), confirmed Rep. Hortman's death at a press conference on Saturday. Governor Walz said that the slayings "appears to be a politically motivated assassination".
State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were both also shot multiple times.
Walz said that they 0are out of surgery.
Walz was "cautiously optimistic" that Sen. Hoffman and his wife will survive.
"This was an act of targeted political violence," Walz said.
Both legislators represents suburbs in the Minneapolis metropolitan area.
U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) said on X, "I am heartbroken and horrified by the tragic loss of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were taken from us in an act of violence. Melissa was a good friend and we started in politics at the same time and were always there for each other. She was a true public servant to the core, dedicating her life to serving Minnesotans with integrity and compassion. Melissa's legacy will endure, but today we grieve deeply. John's and my prayers are with their children, their loved ones, and all who are mourning this devastating loss."
Law enforcement appears to be on the trail of the suspect.
"Police have issued a shelter in place order in the area surrounding the Edinburgh Golf Course as they search for a suspect in "multiple targeted shootings," Klobuchar said on X on Saturday morning. "The suspect is armed and dangerous and may be impersonating law enforcement."
