Alabama Cannabis endorses Dan McWhorter in HD12 special election

July 12, 2025 – The Alabama Cannabis Coalition announced that it has endorsed businessman Dan McWhorter in the HD12 special election. Marijuana has become a major election issue in Alabama after the State Legislature passed controversial legislation to tax and regulate psychoactive cannabinoids derived from hemp.

"The Alabama Cannabis Coalition is endorsing candidate Dan McWhorter for Alabama House District 12," Cannabis Coalition Founder Marty Schelper said in a press release. "Mr. McWhorter is a bold and courageous anti-prohibitionist candidate. It is of the utmost importance that we return balance to the Alabama House. We MUST remove PROHIBITIONISTS from the Alabama Legislature."

McWhorter announced his candidacy for the special Republican Primary Election for the Alabama District 12 House seat. McWhorter is a native of Bremen, Alabama. He is the founder and owner of Innovative Analytical Solutions LLC.

"I am proud and excited to announce my candidacy for the republican nomination for state representative," McWhorter said in a press release. "Fiscal management and strong leadership are crucial in the difficult economic times which lie ahead."

McWhorter has spoken out strongly at capping property tax payments on homeowners at age 565.

McWhorter is age 68.

Republican primary voters will have the choice between Heather Doyle, Clint Hollingsworth, Dan McWhorter and Cindy Myrex on Tuesday, July 15. If necessary the primary runoff will be on August 12.

The eventual Republican nominee will have to face Democrat Matt Glover in the general election on October 28.

Former Rep. Corey Harbison (R-Cullman) resigned in April to spend more time with his family. Harbison rarely attended legislative meetings during his tenure in the Alabama House of Representatives.
