HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Dr. Deidra J. Willis, a seasoned educator and nationally recognized grant strategist, has announced her candidacy for Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries in the upcoming 2026 election. A Democrat and Huntsville native, Willis brings a unique blend of public service, business acumen, and community advocacy to a race that is already drawing attention across the state.
Willis is best known for her work as a principal at J.O. Johnson High School and as the founder of DJW Impact Consulting, where she has helped minority-owned businesses secure millions in funding through strategic grant writing and capacity-building initiatives. Her recent leadership in statewide training sessions for nonprofit and for-profit enterprises has positioned her as a champion for economic development and agricultural innovation.
In announcing her campaign, Willis emphasized her commitment to empowering rural communities, expanding access to agricultural resources, and modernizing Alabama's farming infrastructure. "Agriculture is the backbone of our state," she said. "We need leadership that understands both the challenges and the opportunities facing our farmers, producers, and small business owners."
The 2026 race for Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries is shaping up to be competitive, with several Republican candidates already declared, including Douglas Mayor Corey Hill, farmer Christina Woerner McInnis, and State Senator Jack Williams. With incumbent Rick Pate term-limited, the seat is wide open, and Willis's entry adds a dynamic voice to the conversation.
Her campaign is expected to focus on equitable access to agricultural programs, support for minority-owned agribusinesses, and leveraging federal and private grants to boost innovation in Alabama's food systems.
As the race unfolds, voters will be watching closely to see how Willis's experience in education, grant strategy, and community development translates into a statewide platform for agricultural leadership.
Dr. Willis recently appeared on the Cannabama Podcast with Jennifer Boozer.
The Democratic primary will be on May 19, 2026.
