Juandalynn Givan Launches Bold Campaign for Mayor of Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - State Representative Juandalynn Givan (D-60) has officially entered the race for Mayor of Birmingham, pledging to restore pride, safety, and opportunity across the Magic City. With the municipal election set for August 26, 2025, Givan becomes one of the first challengers to Mayor Randall Woodfin, joining a growing field of candidates seeking to lead Alabama's largest city.

Standing in front of Birmingham City Hall on January 1, Givan declared, "It is time for change. It is time for rejuvenation. It is time for revitalization. But most of all, it is time to stop the mass killings and shootings that are overtaking our streets and permeating through every neighborhood in the city of Birmingham".

A Platform Built on Action

Givan's campaign centers on a series of branded initiatives aimed at tackling Birmingham's most pressing challenges:

- Operation 122: A commitment to clean up all 99 neighborhoods and 23 communities within the first 122 days of her administration. This includes increased garbage pickup, beautification projects, and anti-litter campaigns.

- Taking it to the Streets: A plan to resurface and repair roadways, with immediate attention to potholes and neglected infrastructure.

- Friends in Transition: A program to address homelessness by eliminating tent communities and providing sustainable housing solutions.

- Youth and Crime Prevention: Expansion of community centers, arts programs, and job training for young people, alongside revitalized neighborhood watch efforts.

- Police Recruitment and Community Safety: A pledge to increase police staffing, improve mental health support for officers, and ensure transparent hiring practices.

Givan has been vocal about the city's rising homicide rate, deteriorating streets, and what she describes as a lack of urgency from current leadership. "The city's filthy," she said in a recent interview. "Streets not paved, potholes not filled, trash and debris in some areas - it looks like a war zone".

Experience and Vision

A Birmingham native and attorney, Givan has represented District 60 in the Alabama House of Representatives since 2010. Her district includes much of Birmingham's west side, an area she says has been neglected for too long. She previously served under former mayors Richard Arrington Jr., Bernard Kincaid, and William Bell, and brings decades of public service experience to her campaign.

Her platform emphasizes "people, protection, and progress," and she has vowed to maintain her legislative seat while campaigning for mayor.

Community Momentum

Givan's campaign has gained traction among church leaders, business owners, and residents who say they feel unseen by current city leadership. She's also received attention for her outspoken criticism of recent appointments and legislative decisions affecting Birmingham's autonomy, including the controversial restructuring of the Birmingham Water Works Board.

If elected, Givan would become only the second Black woman to serve as mayor of Birmingham. Her campaign promises a hands-on approach to governance, with branded initiatives designed to ensure transparency and accountability.

"The city of Birmingham deserves a voice. The city of Birmingham deserves vision. The city of Birmingham deserves a leader who is unafraid and unapologetic in standing for the right and the good of the people," Givan said.
