July 29, 2025 - AUBURN, Ala. - U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has officially launched his campaign for Governor of Alabama, placing education at the heart of his platform. The former Auburn football coach and first-term senator announced his bid at Byron's Smokehouse in Auburn, the same location where he kicked off his successful Senate run in 2019.
Tuberville's campaign website and public remarks emphasize a return to foundational learning and a commitment to expanding opportunity for Alabama's students. "I've always said that education is the key to unlocking opportunity," Tuberville stated. "As the next Governor of Alabama, I'll fight to ensure our students have educational opportunities that prepare them to reach their full potential."
A Coach's Perspective on Education
Drawing on his decades of experience recruiting student-athletes across Alabama, Tuberville says he's visited nearly every high school in the state and understands the challenges facing K–12 education. "We've got great teachers and administrators," he said, "but we've got to put more focus on K through 12. There's too much emphasis on higher education. If you can't read or write, you can't learn".
Tuberville has also expressed openness to a state lottery to fund education initiatives, though he insists the decision should rest with voters.
Campaign Priorities and Endorsements
In addition to education, Tuberville's campaign highlights conservative values, job creation, and border security as key priorities. He has received endorsements from the Alabama Farmers Federation and the Petroleum & Convenience Marketers Association of Alabama, signaling strong support from rural and business communities.
Tuberville's campaign slogan - "Make Alabama Great Again" - echoes his close alliance with former President Donald Trump, who has reportedly given his full support to the gubernatorial bid.
Looking Ahead
With Governor Kay Ivey term-limited, Tuberville enters the race as the leading Republican contender. His decision not to seek a second Senate term has opened the door for a competitive GOP primary for his seat, while his gubernatorial campaign is expected to draw national attention due to his high-profile political and athletic background.
As Tuberville balances his remaining Senate duties with weekend campaign stops across the state, he says his focus remains on serving Alabama. "I'm a football coach, I'm a leader, I'm a builder, I'm a recruiter - and we're going to grow Alabama," he said.
