August 6, 2025 - MOODY, AL - Alabama's Gulf Coast fishing community is set to benefit from a new emergency rule issued by NOAA Fisheries that increases red grouper catch limits and extends the recreational fishing season through the end of 2025. The move follows an updated stock assessment showing red grouper populations are healthy enough to support expanded harvests while maintaining sustainability.
"This emergency rule means more time on the water catching more red grouper, and it is good news for Gulf of America fishermen," said Eugenio Piñeiro Soler, acting assistant secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA Fisheries assistant administrator. "NOAA Fisheries continues to promote opportunities for American men and women on the water, on the docks, and in the fisheries industries across our great nation."
🐟 What This Means for Alabama:
• Longer Season, Bigger Catch: Recreational anglers from Dauphin Island to Orange Beach will enjoy an extended season and increased catch limits, giving charter captains and weekend fishermen alike more time to pursue red grouper.
• Boost for Local Economy: The expanded harvest is expected to bring economic gains to Alabama's coastal communities, supporting bait shops, marinas, seafood processors, and tourism.
• Sustainable Fishing: The rule is backed by science-NOAA's updated stock assessment confirms that red grouper can be harvested at higher levels without harming long-term population health.
