August 18, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a strong show of support for progressive leadership in the South, People For the American Way has officially endorsed incumbent Mayor Randall Woodfin in his bid for re-election as mayor of Birmingham, Alabama. The national advocacy organization, known for championing civil rights, democratic values, and inclusive governance, praised Woodfin's record and reaffirmed its commitment to helping elect candidates who prioritize justice and community empowerment.
"For more than forty years, People For the American Way has shown that when everyday people organize for freedom, justice, and true democracy, our communities move forward," Woodfin said in a statement following the endorsement. "Their endorsement tells every resident of Birmingham that our fight to make every neighborhood safer, every classroom stronger, and every opportunity attainable is part of a larger movement that puts people first. I'm proud to stand with People For as we build the next chapter of progress in the Magic City."
People For the American Way President Svante Myrick echoed that sentiment, stating, "Mayor Woodfin has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the people of Birmingham. As mayor, he's championed public safety, revitalized the local area, and invested in community-based strategies to improve the lives of Birmingham residents. We're confident his continued leadership will take Birmingham even further in the future."
Woodfin, who first took office in 2017 after defeating longtime incumbent William Bell, has built his administration around the philosophy of "putting people first." Now in his second term, he has prioritized neighborhood revitalization, youth investment, public safety, and economic opportunity. His proposed 2026 operating budget reflects these values, with major allocations for street resurfacing, sidewalk improvements, weed abatement, and traffic calming. Since 2019, Birmingham has seen over $100 million invested in street infrastructure alone, not including additional federal grants and capital project funding.
Public safety has also been a cornerstone of Woodfin's leadership. His administration has launched initiatives such as the RESTORE Youth Re-entry Program, the Safe Haven Initiative in city parks, and expanded funding for community violence intervention. A $16 million police recruitment and retention program underscores his commitment to both enforcement and prevention, while programs like Common Ground conflict resolution in Birmingham City Schools aim to address root causes of violence.
Beyond infrastructure and safety, Woodfin has emphasized inclusive economic development. Through the Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity, his administration has worked to attract new businesses, support entrepreneurs, and prepare residents for quality jobs. Birmingham's transformation from a post-industrial city to a hub for life sciences and financial services has been guided by policies that prioritize equity and resilience.
Woodfin's endorsement by People For the American Way places him in a national spotlight, aligning Birmingham's local progress with broader movements for justice and democratic reform. As the city prepares for its next municipal election, the endorsement signals confidence in Woodfin's leadership and a belief that Birmingham can continue to serve as a model for Southern cities navigating growth, diversity, and civic renewal.
