Ciara Smith Wins Anniston Mayoral Election in Historic Landslide

August 27, 2025 - ANNISTON, AL. - In a decisive outcome that marks a new chapter for Anniston, Ciara Smith has been elected mayor with 57.31% of the vote, defeating four challengers in a crowded field. Smith, who had been serving as appointed mayor since May following Jack Draper's resignation, now becomes the city's first African-American and youngest-ever elected mayor.

""Yes, I am a woman, and yes, I'm the youngest, but I am also extremely knowledgeable and extremely qualified," said Smith. It's an honorable feeling, but there's also the feeling that this is what I'm supposed to be doing."

""Anniston deserves transformational progress," said Smith. "We must build safe neighborhoods, attract new businesses, and invest in infrastructure that reflects the pride we have in our hometown."

Smith's victory came against a diverse slate of candidates:

• Steven Folks: 19.49%

• Ben Little: 12.08%

• Kevin Cheatwood: 10.26%

• Michael Woods: 0.86%

With over 2,900 ballots cast, Smith's margin of victory reflects strong voter confidence in her leadership during her interim tenure. Her background as a Jacksonville State University graduate and community advocate helped galvanize support across generational and demographic lines.
