Jaguars Roar to Victory in Season Opener Against Morgan State

August 30, 2025 - MOBILE, AL - The South Alabama Jaguars kicked off their 2025 football season in commanding fashion, defeating Morgan State 38–21 at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile. Fueled by a balanced offensive attack and a relentless defense, the Jaguars set the tone early and never looked back, giving fans plenty to cheer about as they look ahead to a promising campaign.

Bullock Leads the Ground Game

Running back Kentrel Bullock was the engine of South Alabama's offense, rushing for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. His explosive runs and ability to break tackles kept Morgan State's defense on its heels throughout the night. Bullock's first touchdown came midway through the first quarter, capping off a 75-yard drive that showcased the Jaguars' physicality up front.

"Bullock ran like a man possessed," said head coach Major Applewhite after the game. "He set the tone for us, and the offensive line gave him room to work."

Davenport Efficient and Sharp

Quarterback Bishop Davenport delivered a near-flawless performance, completing 12 of 14 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. His poise in the pocket and quick decision-making allowed South Alabama to maintain rhythm and control. Davenport connected with wide receiver Caullin Lacy for a 22-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and later found Jalen Wayne on a slant route for another score just before halftime.

Davenport's efficiency helped the Jaguars build a 24–7 lead by the break, and his ability to spread the ball around kept Morgan State's secondary guessing.

Defense Dominates with Turnovers

While the offense lit up the scoreboard, South Alabama's defense made its presence felt with four forced turnovers, including two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Linebacker Ty Goodwill led the unit with 11 tackles, anchoring a front seven that consistently disrupted Morgan State's backfield.

Cornerback Devin Neal snagged a key interception in the third quarter, halting a Bears drive that had reached the red zone. Moments later, defensive end Chris Henderson recovered a fumble that set up Bullock's second touchdown run.

"Our defense played fast and physical," Applewhite said. "We challenged them to create momentum, and they responded."

Special Teams and Crowd Energy

Special teams also contributed, with kicker Diego Guajardo converting all five extra points and a 41-yard field goal. The Jaguars' coverage units kept Morgan State from gaining any traction on returns, and the home crowd of nearly 25,000 added energy throughout the night.

The win marks a strong start for South Alabama, who are looking to build on last season's bowl appearance and contend in the Sun Belt Conference.

Looking Ahead

Next up, the Jaguars face a tougher test as they travel to New Orleans to take on Tulane, a team known for its speed and discipline. If South Alabama can replicate the balance and intensity they showed in Week 1, they'll be well-positioned to make noise in the early season.

For now, the Jaguars can savor a dominant opening night and the promise of what lies ahead.
