Alabama destroys Louisiana Monroe

September 6, 2025 – TUSCALOOSA, AL – The University of Alabama football team was beaten and embarrassed by Florida State University in week one of the college football season. With Bama's national title hopes hanging by a thread and the Tide out of the Top Twenty for the first time in nearly two decades, Alabama was ready for a cupcake opponent – and that is what they got in Louisiana Monroe. The Tide dismantled their hopelessly outmatched opponent 73–0 at Bryant-Denny Stadium in a game that really was probably not even that close.

Alabama head Coach Kalen DeBoer was not going to be embarrassed again – this time in front of a packed crowd of 100,077 of the Tide's faithful. Alabama was never threatened by La. Monroe.

Alabama junior quarterback Ty Simpson was nearly perfect ana Monroe in his limited time in the game. He completed 17 of his 17 pass attempts for 226 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown.

The backup quarterbacks got a lot of playing time with similar results. Second string QB Austin Mac – a transfer from Washington - went 8-for-10, for 80 yards, and two touchdowns. Five Star freshman phenom quarterback Keelon Russell started his college career with two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.

Wide receiver Germie Bernard had two touchdown receptions in the first quarter.

DeBoer told reporters he wanted the team to "cut it loose" after the Week 1 loss-and they did just that. Alabama's offense was crisp, and the defense suffocated ULM from start to finish. It was the most points an Alabama team had scored in a game since the late Paul "Bear" Bryant was the head coach and Richard M. Nixon was the President.

Alabama scored on all 11 possessions, 10 touchdowns and a field goal.

The Tide offense had 583 total yards of total offense. The Tide defense meanwhile held ULM to just 146 yards of total offense on the day.

The gap between the premiere programs in college football and the have nots has never been greater due to the ability for the top programs to monetarily compensate players and transfer rules allowing unlimited player movement. Alabama pays an estimated $13.5 million in direct payments to football players (not counting scholarships) and another $20 million + in NIL compensation. ULM on the other hand pays out about $2 million in direct player compensation and has an estimated total compensation of right around $1 million. Wide Receiver Ryan Williams makes an estimated $1.8 million+ - more than the entire ULM team combined. A $34 million plus team versus a $3 million team produces a 73 to 0 outcome.

The SEC will move to nine conference games next year likely eliminating one of these annual cupcake games.

Bama moves back into power four play this week when Michigan comes to town.
