State and federal leaders signal strong support for continued growth in Alabama's energy sector
Alabama is entering a new era of energy leadership with the appointment of Clay Scofield as President and CEO of the Energy Institute of Alabama (EIA), an organization dedicated to advancing the state's energy future. State and federal leaders have voiced strong support for Scofield's leadership and for the state's ongoing efforts to position itself as a powerhouse in energy policy and economic growth.
U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) emphasized the significance of this leadership change for both Alabama and the broader national energy landscape. "President Trump ushered in a new era of American energy dominance in our nation, and now, with Clay Scofield as President and CEO of the Energy Institute of Alabama, a new chapter in our great state's energy leadership is beginning," she said.
Senator Britt also highlighted the critical importance of energy for Alabama's long-term success. "Energy will continue to be one of the most vital pieces of our strategic growth in Alabama, and we need to strengthen this sector to ensure we remain competitive long into the future. I will always be a partner at the federal level to advance American energy dominance, bolster U.S. national security, and help hardworking Alabama families achieve their American Dream."
According to the EIA, Alabama lawmakers and Governor Kay Ivey have already taken significant steps toward ensuring the state's energy future. During the 2025 legislative session, the Alabama Legislature passed-and Governor Ivey signed-the Powering Growth package of bills into law. This sweeping legislation is designed to reinforce energy infrastructure and transmission, expedite energy projects, and ensure Alabama remains competitive in economic growth.
Scofield is expected to play a key role in implementing this ambitious plan, guiding Alabama as it seeks to strengthen its status as an energy leader and serve as a model for other states.
Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) praised Scofield's track record and stressed the growing connection between energy availability and economic development. "Whether it be his work expanding broadband infrastructure during his time in the Legislature or his efforts to support our state's business community in his previous role, Clay has played a vital role in securing Alabama's economic future," said Ledbetter. "At a time when energy availability and economic growth have never been more connected, our state needs someone of Clay's caliber leading EIA to ensure we are taking the necessary steps to remain competitive."
As Alabama continues to pave the way for increased energy production and transmission, leaders agree that more work remains to be done to fully realize the state's potential. The ongoing focus on energy policy, infrastructure, and economic growth signals a promising future for Alabama as it sets its sights on becoming a national example in the energy sector.
