September 13, 2025 – TROY, AL – Troy University fought really hard against Clemson last week. This week they were completely overwhelmed by Memphis in a 28 to 7 beatdown.
The Trojan only had 72 yards passing and 40 yards rushing on the day. Memphis on the other hand had a very balanced attack of 213 yards passing and 217 yards rushing.
Troy's only scoring drives was a Taleeq Robbins 11-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
Memphis running back Sutton Smith had 18 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
Memphis Quarterback Brendon Lewis: completed 17 passes for 27 attempts for 213 passing yards, and one touchdown. Makari Bodiford also rushed for a touchdown.
Troy's longest offensive play was a 25 yard reception by Roman Mothershed.
Donnie Smith made the strip sack leading to Troy's only score.
Troy's offense didn't cross midfield until the final two minutes of the game. Their best drive ended in an interception on 2nd-and-goal from the 5-yard line. Memphis outgained Troy 430–112 and ran 17 more plays.
Troy struggled to protect quarterback Will Crowder and failed to establish the run. Crowder was injured in the game. Troy head coach Jon Sumrall spoke candidly after the Trojans' 28–7 loss to Memphis on September 13, addressed losing starting quarterback Goose Crowder.
Backup Quarterback Tucker Kilcrease was forced into action. He struggled. Kilcrease went 10-of-29 passing and faced constant pressure from the Memphis' defensive front.
"Tucker battled. He's a tough kid, and he kept swinging," said Sumrail. "But we didn't give him much help. We've got to be better around him."
Kilcrease went 10-of-29 passing and faced constant pressure from Memphis' defensive front.
"I thought our defense gave us chances. Taleeq [Robbins] made a great play, Donnie [Smith] got the strip," said Sumrail. "But when you're on the field that long, it wears you down."
Troy will look to regroup next week when they host Buffalo on September 20. Let me know if you'd like a preview of that matchup or a deeper breakdown of Troy's offensive struggles.
