Jacksonville, AL - September 20, 2025
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks (1–2) return home this Saturday for a pivotal matchup against the Murray State Racers (0–3) as part of the university's Homecoming Weekend festivities. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. CT at AmFirst Stadium, with live coverage on ESPN+.
After a narrow 41–34 road loss to Georgia Southern last week, the Gamecocks are eager to bounce back and build momentum heading into conference play. Murray State, meanwhile, is still searching for its first win of the season after dropping contests to East Tennessee State, Southeastern Louisiana, and Georgia State by double digits.
Gamecocks Lean on Ground Game
Jacksonville State's offense has been powered by a dominant rushing attack, averaging 239 yards per game on the ground. Running back C. Cook leads the way with 390 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Gavin Wimsatt has added 165 rushing yards and three scores of his own.
Wimsatt has also thrown for 369 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, completing 57% of his passes. His top target has been B. Rechsteiner, who has hauled in eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. C. Coombs and D. Johnson have contributed solid yardage in the short passing game.
Head coach Rich Rodriguez emphasized the need for cleaner execution and fewer penalties after last week's loss. "We've got to finish drives and stay disciplined," Rodriguez said. "This is a big week for our guys-not just because it's Homecoming, but because we need to get back on track."
Murray State's Struggles Continue
The Racers have struggled on both sides of the ball, allowing 42.3 points per game while scoring just 20.7. Quarterback J. Ogle has thrown for 618 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions, completing 62.7% of his passes. His top weapons include wide receiver D. Cannon (198 yards) and L. Desjardins (167 yards, one touchdown).
Running back J. Northington has been a bright spot, rushing for 156 yards and three touchdowns, but the offense has been inconsistent and prone to turnovers. Defensively, Murray State has allowed over 500 yards per game and has yet to record a sack from its starting defensive line.
Jacksonville State's ability to control the clock and dominate the line of scrimmage will be critical. If Wimsatt can avoid turnovers and the defense can contain Northington, the Gamecocks should be in position to secure a comfortable win.
Homecoming Energy
With alumni returning and festivities planned throughout the weekend, the atmosphere at AmFirst Stadium is expected to be electric. Jacksonville State has historically performed well in Homecoming games, and fans will be eager to see the team deliver a strong showing.
A win would move the Gamecocks to 2–2 and provide a much-needed confidence boost before facing Sam Houston and Liberty in back-to-back conference games.
