South Alabama Hosts Coastal Carolina in Crucial Sun Belt Matchup

MOBILE, AL - September 20, 2025 - The South Alabama Jaguars (1–2) return to Hancock Whitney Stadium this Saturday to face the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (1–2) in a pivotal Sun Belt Conference clash. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. CT and will stream live on ESPN+.

Both teams enter Week 4 looking to rebound from tough losses and gain traction in conference play. South Alabama fell 31–15 to Auburn last weekend, while Coastal Carolina was shut out 38–0 by East Carolina. Despite identical records, the Jaguars are heavy favorites, with oddsmakers giving them a 14.5-point edge and an 85% win probability.

Jaguars Lean on Davenport, Bullock, and Voisin

South Alabama's offense has shown flashes of explosiveness, led by quarterback Bishop Davenport, who has thrown for 567 yards, six touchdowns, and just one interception while completing 73.4% of his passes. He's also added 79 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

Running back Kentrel Bullock has been a steady force, rushing for 291 yards and three touchdowns on 63 carries. Wide receiver Devin Voisin leads the receiving corps with 266 yards and four touchdowns on 19 catches, averaging nearly 89 yards per game.

The Jaguars are averaging 366 yards of offense per game-ranking 86th nationally-but have struggled to finish drives, converting just 36.1% of third downs. Defensively, they've allowed 361 yards per game, including 205.7 rushing yards, which ranks among the bottom 15 in the FBS.

Still, the secondary has been a bright spot, surrendering just 155.3 passing yards per game, good for 27th nationally. Defensive backs Wesley Miller and Ty Goodwill have combined for 27 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and one interception.

Coastal Carolina's Offensive Woes

The Chanticleers have struggled mightily on offense, averaging just 6.7 points per game-dead last in the FBS. Quarterback MJ Morris has thrown for 265 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions, completing just 56.9% of his passes.

Running back Dominic Knicely leads the ground game with 137 yards on 18 carries, while wide receiver Robby Washington has 100 receiving yards on nine catches. Coastal Carolina ranks 121st in total offense (292.3 yards per game) and 116th in passing offense.

Turnovers have plagued the Chanticleers, who hold a -7 turnover margin-third worst in the nation. Their red zone offense ranks 131st, scoring on just 57.1% of trips. Third-down efficiency has also been poor, converting just 31% of attempts.

Defensively, Coastal Carolina has allowed 368 yards per game, including 212.7 through the air and 155.3 on the ground. They've forced just two turnovers and have yet to record a sack from their starting defensive line.

What's at Stake

For South Alabama, a win would even their record at 2–2 and provide momentum heading into next week's road trip to North Texas. For Coastal Carolina, it's a chance to reset and salvage a season that's quickly slipping away.

With Homecoming energy in the air and a favorable matchup on paper, the Jaguars have a prime opportunity to assert themselves in the Sun Belt race. But they'll need to clean up their run defense and capitalize on scoring chances to avoid a trap game.
