November 1, 2025 - MOBILE, Ala. - The South Alabama Jaguars came up short in a competitive Sun Belt Conference matchup on Saturday, November 1, falling 31–22 to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at Hancock Whitney Stadium. The loss dropped the Jaguars to 2–7 overall and 1–4 in conference play, extending a difficult season under head coach Major Applewhite.
Louisiana jumped out to an early lead and maintained control through much of the game, capitalizing on key defensive stops and timely scoring. South Alabama showed flashes of resilience, particularly in the second half, but couldn't overcome missed opportunities in the red zone and a late turnover that sealed the outcome.
Quarterback Bishop Davenport led the Jaguars with 203 passing yards, including a 65-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Jeremy Scott in the fourth quarter. Scott had a breakout performance, finishing with 102 receiving yards and giving the Jaguars a chance to rally late. Running back Kentrel Bullock added 75 rushing yards, contributing to a balanced offensive effort.
Despite the late surge, South Alabama's comeback fell short. The Jaguars drove to the one-yard line in the final minutes but failed to score on two consecutive attempts. Louisiana's defense held firm, and linebacker Jaden Duggar intercepted a pass on the next possession to end the game.
Head coach Major Applewhite acknowledged the team's effort but emphasized the need for sharper execution. "We fought hard, but you can't leave points on the field," Applewhite said. "We had momentum late, but execution in the red zone has to be better."
Applewhite praised Davenport's leadership and Scott's performance, noting the potential for growth in the final stretch of the season. "We've got playmakers, but we've got to finish drives and tighten up on defense," he said. "That's the difference between winning and losing close games."
The Jaguars now turn their attention to the final three games of the season, beginning with a road trip to UL Monroe on November 15. They'll return home to face Southern Miss on November 22 for Senior Day and Military Appreciation Night, before closing the season at Texas State on November 29.
With bowl eligibility out of reach, Applewhite said the focus is on pride, development, and finishing strong. "We've got to play for each other and for this program," he said. "There's still a lot to prove, and we've got to respond the right way."
