Tuberville Honors Two Alabamians Ahead of Veterans Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) paid tribute this week to two distinguished Alabamians in recognition of Veterans Day: America's oldest living Marine, Roy Drinkard of Cullman, and Army Master Sergeant Harvey Mathis of Enterprise.

Speaking from the Senate floor, Tuberville reflected on Alabama's deep ties to patriotism and military service. He noted that the nation's first Veterans Day celebration was held in Birmingham in 1947, organized by World War II veteran Raymond Weeks, who continued the tradition until his death in 1985.

"Alabama is home to nearly half a million veterans," Tuberville said. "Their service did not end when their time in the military did-they have selflessly contributed to their communities long after taking off their military uniforms."

Honoring Roy Drinkard

Drinkard, a World War II veteran, is recognized as the oldest living Marine at 105 years old. After returning from the war, he helped recruit businesses to Alabama as part of the "Flying Fifty," founded Drinkard Chevrolet, and later led Drinkard Development. His efforts helped shape Cullman into a thriving community. Drinkard remains active in his church and serves on the Board of Trustees at Troy University.

Recognizing Harvey Mathis

Tuberville also honored Master Sergeant Harvey Mathis, who retired from the Army in 2000 after nearly 25 years of service. Mathis continued his commitment to public service by entering law enforcement at age 42. He became a chief investigator, working to bring justice in cases involving crimes against children, and later served with the Dale County Sheriff's Department and as Police Chief of Daleville.

A Call to Gratitude

Tuberville closed his remarks with a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and their families. "If you want to thank a soldier, be the kind of American worth fighting for," he said. "To all our veterans and their families, we say 'Thank you.' May God bless you, and continue to bless our great country."
