UAB blowout loss overshadowed by intrateam violence

November 22, 2025 – BIRMINGHAM – UAB was routed by South Florida 48 to 18 in a game that was overshadowed by senseless violence before the players ever went on the field. A UAB offensive lineman has been accused of stabbing two of his teammates on Saturday morning before the game.

UAB offensive lineman Daniel Mincey was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder.

Time and Location: The stabbing occurred around midday at UAB's Football Operations Center, while the team was preparing for it's home game against South Florida.

Mincey is a redshirt freshman offensive lineman who transferred from the University of Kentucky in May. He has been a disappointment for the Blazers. To date he had not appeared in a game this season and was not listed on the depth chart.

The names of the two injured players have not been released as of press time. Both were taken to UAB Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Despite the horrifying incident, UAB officials elected to go ahead and play the game.

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen said that some players chose to sit out due to the shock of what they had just experienced.

UAB kept the game surprisingly close in the first half – given the circumstances – 17 to 10. The Bulls however dominated the second half, outscoring the Blazers 31–8 at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.

South Florida received the ball coming out in the second half. They scored on that position and then followed that up with a 17 to 0 third quarter performance that effectively ended the game.

UAB had 251 yards passing but QB Jalen Kitna's 3 interceptions were too much for the Blazers to overcome. Meanwhile South Florida quarterback Byrum Brown completed 19 pass on 25 attempts for 353 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 2 rushing touchdowns.

UAB fired head Coach Trent Dilfer mid-season. Interim Coach Alex Mortenson is holding down the fort until UAB higher ups can decide where they want to go from here.

UAB will conclude the 2025 season next week against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes on November 29, 2025, at 2:00 PM CT. The game will be played at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma. UAB who currently hold a 3–8 record. Tulsa enters the matchup at 4–7. Both teams would like to end their disappointing seasons with a win. Neither would be bowl eligible even with the win.
