Alex Mortensen Named Head Coach of UAB Football

December 5, 2025 - BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram has officially named Alex Mortensen the eighth head coach in UAB Football history, ushering in a new era for the Blazers with a leader already deeply embedded in the program's recent success.

Mortensen, who has served as UAB's offensive coordinator since 2022, took over as interim head coach midway through the 2025 season. His leadership was immediately felt, guiding the Blazers to a stunning upset over No. 22 Memphis in his first game at the helm and securing the program's first road win in three years to close the season.

"I love Birmingham, UAB and this team," Mortensen said. "I look forward to building a successful program that represents our university and fans well. I'm grateful for the confidence being placed in me, and we will make the most of it."

A Proven Offensive Mind

Under Mortensen's direction, the UAB offense has flourished, averaging 415.6 yards per game and setting a single-season school record for offensive output. His performance earned him a nomination for the prestigious Broyles Award, which honors the nation's top assistant coaches.

Before joining UAB, Mortensen spent nine years on staff at the University of Alabama under legendary coach Nick Saban. During that time, he contributed to three national championships and worked alongside some of the sport's most respected offensive minds, including Lane Kiffin, Brian Daboll, Mike Locksley, Steve Sarkisian, and Bill O'Brien.

"Coach Mortensen is a true rising star in college football," said Ingram. "His vision for UAB Football is clear: to succeed in the American and bring winning football back to Birmingham."

A Career Built on Excellence

Mortensen began his coaching career in 2012 at New Mexico Highlands as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. There, he helped quarterback Emmanuel Lewis achieve the second-highest total offense and passing yards per game in Division II.

His coaching journey has been defined by a commitment to excellence, a trait that UAB President Ray Watts believes will elevate the program.

"Coach Mortensen brings leadership, energy, and experience that will help us elevate UAB Athletics on the national stage," Watts said. "He embodies the resilient, fighting spirit of UAB and our fans."

Community and Institutional Support

The appointment comes with a renewed commitment from UAB leadership to invest in the football program's future. Hatton Smith, Chair of the UAB Athletics Foundation, emphasized the thoroughness of the search and Mortensen's ability to lead under pressure.

"He has demonstrated spectacular leadership," Smith said. "With his experience and UAB leadership's commitment to increasing resources for Athletics, Coach Mortensen is poised for success."

While the financial terms of Mortensen's agreement are still subject to approval by the UA System Board of Trustees, the university has expressed full support for the hire.

From Quarterback to Head Coach

A former quarterback at the University of Arkansas, Mortensen earned a degree in communications before completing a master's in Sport Management at Alabama. His journey from player to coach has been marked by a deep understanding of the game and a passion for mentorship.
