We got to experience a warm Christmas this year but looks like it will be a big change to a frigid New Year's! Of course, New Year's celebrations bring fireworks, and fireworks and pets just don't mix. So please keep your pets secure (and warm) inside your home on New Year's Eve and perhaps even the evening/night of the 1st. Far too many pets end up lost from their fear of fireworks and not all make it home safe.
Whether inside or not, also make sure your pet has a collar and its rabies tag at a minimum. ID tags work fastest at getting your pet home, followed by microchips though those require the pet to be scanned generally at a Vet or a Shelter. If your pet is chipped and you have moved or changed phone numbers, NOW is the time to update that with the Chip company. If a pet was adopted from our Shelter call us and we can update your information in our system easily. We can also make custom engraved ID Tags at our Shelter for $10 and only takes about five minutes.
If your pet does get lost make sure to post to your neighborhood social media sites, as well as Lost & Found Pet Facebook pages. For Elmore County Alabama Lost & Found Pets go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/1575007856156540 . Make sure to update your post if you find your pet, or if still missing after a day or two. We recommend putting your phone number on your lost report so a finder can call/text you in case you are not actively monitoring Facebook. Don't delay in calling us to report your missing (or a found) pet at 334-567-3377 (leave message if after hours). And you can email us the info and picture to hselco@bellsouth.net. If your pet is microchipped, report that your pet is missing to your microchip company as well.
For those with livestock, please check your fences and check your stock New Year's Day as Fireworks can also cause livestock to panic and go through fences.
And please plan for these upcoming freezing temperatures to ensure pets and livestock will be safe & have a ready water supply.
The Shelter will close at Noon on Wed, 31 Dec and remain closed on Thu, 1 Jan. We will be back to normal hours on Friday, 2 January.
We wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year!
