New high school athletics classifications passed by the ASHAA

January 23, 2026 - MONTGOMERY - The Alabama High School Athletics Association (AHSAA) retaliated against the Governor and the Alabama Legislature for passing the CHOOSE Act by punishing the private schools. Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year no private school can participate in the same playoffs as Alabama public schools. The AHSAA voted to decrease the number of public school classification from 7 to 6 The private schools were all moved to two different classifications.

Below is a clear, organized guide showing you exactly where to find each region for all public and private classifications. These are the official AHSAA maps and lists for football, volleyball, flag football, cross‑country, and swimming/diving. Realigning all the spring sports is in a meeting yet to come

This drastic response is due to law requiring that students who transfer from one school to another be allowed to play sports - as required by law in the CHOOSE Act. The ASHAA defied the Governor and Legislature during the 2025-2026 school year forcing the Governor and Speaker of the House to sue the ASHAA to enforce the law. That lawsuit is ongoing. The administrators and coaches of the public schools have accused the private schools of "recruiting" players. If these allegations are true, that is not illegal under Alabama law. Students transfer from school to school because of superior athletics facilities and coaching. The requirement that a student not participate in athletics for a year after transferring unless approved by the ASHAA is not found anywhere in the actual laws of the state of Alabama. New legislation was expected on Tuesday. How the Legislature will address this latest act of open defiance from the ASHAA leadership is anyone's guess at this point.
