February 2, 2026 - MONTGOMERY – Governor Kay Ivey renewed her call for stronger public safety measures on Monday, urging lawmakers to pass legislation that would significantly increase penalties for individuals who attempt to elude law enforcement officers. The proposal, highlighted as a key priority in her recent State of the State address, is part of the governor's broader effort to crack down on dangerous criminal behavior.
During her address, Governor Ivey emphasized the responsibility of government to protect its citizens and praised law enforcement officers for their service. She warned, however, that current laws do not go far enough to deter offenders who flee police - a crime that has, in some cases, resulted in fatalities.
"Government at all levels should always prioritize public safety. And we can thank the men and women in blue for enforcing our laws," Ivey said. "Unfortunately, some criminals attempt to elude their authority. There are repeat offenders and in the worst cases, there has even been loss of life. It is time we crack down on that reckless, criminal behavior and pass a bill led by
Rep. Reed Ingram (R-Montgomery) echoed those concerns, stressing that fleeing from police is far from a victimless act.
"Fleeing from law enforcement is not a harmless mistake – it is a dangerous decision that puts officers and innocent families at serious risk," Ingram said. "By elevating these offenses and establishing mandatory minimums for repeat violations, we are sending a clear message: Alabama stands firmly behind our law enforcement officers and will not tolerate reckless behavior that jeopardizes public safety."
Public safety has been a central theme of Governor Ivey's administration. During the 2025 Regular Session, she advanced her "Safe Alabama" package of bills, which she says made meaningful progress but left more work to be done.
"In Alabama, we enforce the law, and I look forward to this bill reaching my desk," Ivey said.
As she enters her final year in office, the governor has made clear that strengthening public safety laws will remain at the forefront of her agenda.
