MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen is applauding the Alabama House of Representatives for passing HB 214, legislation designed to prohibit foreign nationals and foreign corporations from influencing state elections. The bill, sponsored by Rep. James Lomax (R‑Huntsville), would bar foreign entities from directly or indirectly contributing to political candidates or political action committees involved in campaigns for candidates, constitutional amendments, or referendums.
Allen described the measure as a significant step toward strengthening Alabama's election security.
"Representative Lomax has been a strong advocate for HB 214 and for bolstering election security. Banning foreign influence in Alabama elections is a common-sense measure of election integrity. I look forward to seeing this bill pass out of the Senate and head to Governor Ivey's desk," Allen said.
While federal law already prohibits foreign nationals from donating to candidates or political committees, gaps in the law have allowed foreign money to flow into ballot‑issue campaigns across the country. Supporters of HB 214 argue that the bill closes those loopholes and gives state and local prosecutors clearer authority to pursue violations involving foreign interference.
According to Allen, the legislation reflects a broader commitment to transparency and trust in the electoral process.
"Alabama's hardworking men and women deserve elections that are funded honestly and transparently," he said. "I am proud to see the Alabama House take action to protect the Alabama elections process from improper foreign influence."
If enacted, HB 214 would add Alabama to the growing list of states seeking to reinforce protections against foreign involvement in state‑level political activity.
Allen, Alabama's 54th Secretary of State, serves as the state's Chief Elections Official and oversees more than 1,000 statutory duties. Additional information about the Secretary of State's office and its responsibilities is available at http://www.sos.alabama.gov.
Allen is a Republican candidate for Alabama Lieutenant Governor.
