Alabama House Dems Introduce Tariff Relief Act to Protect Businesses & Jobs

March 6, 2026 - MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama House Democrats this week introduced a legislative package designed to protect Alabama businesses and provide relief from the ongoing impacts of the Trump administration's destructive tariffs and trade wars.

The Alabama Tariff Relief Act aims to help a wide range of industries manage business disruptions through incentives and strategies to enhance domestic sourcing and stockpiling,

modernize logistics, strengthen supply chains, and build resilience.

"When commerce is disrupted by tariffs, trade wars, and other erratic policy decisions, businesses suffer, entrepreneurship is stifled, prices rise, and job opportunities evaporate. It's happening right before our eyes, and we can't let it continue to snowball," said House Democratic Leader Anthony Daniels. "The Tariff Relief Act is about maintaining Alabama's

competitiveness in the global economy and protecting jobs here at home. These industries are the backbone of our economy. Generations of Alabamians worked hard to build them and right now we need stability and support so that they continue to grow."

The bills are as follows:

House Bill 547 – the Medical Research Supply Assurance and Trade Resilience Act (Rep. Jones) enhances Alabama's healthcare and biotech industry by safeguarding critical research and medical supply chains through strategic stockpiling, domestic sourcing incentives, and biomedical trade facilitation.

House Bills 548 and 549 – the Automotive Supply Chain Resilience and Expansion Act (Rep. Lawrence) establishes a strategic framework to support Alabama's automotive industry with targeted relief, supply chain incentives, and export assistance.

House Bill 550 – the Poultry Export Stabilization and Market Access Act (Rep. Travis) protects Alabama's poultry industry by expanding export support, enhancing biosecurity and logistics infrastructure, and supporting domestic market resilience against foreign tariff retaliation.

House Bill 551 – the Steel and Advanced Manufacturing Competitiveness Act (Rep. Jackson) supports Alabama's steel and heavy manufacturing sectors by providing financial assistance, procurement preferences, and innovation incentives.

House Bill 552 – the Aerospace Export Safeguard and Innovation Act (Rep. Lands) supports Alabama's aerospace and defense sectors in navigating global trade instability by enhancing export assistance, investing in R&D resilience, and ensuring continuity of supply for high-tech manufacturing.

House Bill 553 – the Tourism Revenue Recovery and Global Promotion Act (Rep. Clarke) boosts Alabama's tourism economies affected by foreign travel slowdowns and disruptions by expanding international marketing, supporting tourism-dependent businesses, and incentivizing destination development in affected regions.

House Bills 554 and 555 – the Energy Supply & Chemical Trade Stabilization Act (Rep. Hall) bolsters Alabama's energy and chemical manufacturing sectors by incentivizing domestic production, supporting feedstock substitution, and modernizing logistics infrastructure critical to energy and industrial chemical supply chains.
