Hampton Harris Blasts Shomari Figures for Embracing Endorsement from Indicted SPLC: An Organization Accused of Funding Hate, Racism, and Hypocrisy

Republican nominee Hampton Harris for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District slammed U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) for accepting an endorsement from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) Action Fund just days after the scandal-plagued organization was federally indicted for fraud and secretly funneling millions to violent racist hate groups.

On Monday, April 27, the SPLC Action Fund proudly announced its endorsement of Rep. Figures and nine other Congressional Black Caucus members. This came only six days after a Montgomery federal grand jury hit the SPLC with an 11-count indictment on April 21, charging it with wire fraud, false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, between 2014 and 2023 the SPLC secretly diverted more than $3 million in donor funds to individuals tied to the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, and the National Socialist Party of America. These are the very same racist hate groups the civil rights movement was founded to defeat.

"Shomari Figures has proudly accepted the endorsement of an organization exposed for funding hate, racism, and breathtaking hypocrisy," said Hampton Harris. "Alabama's Second Congressional District is home to Montgomery, the cradle of the civil rights movement. Yet Representative Figures has aligned himself with a group accused of bankrolling the exact racist extremists that made the civil rights struggle necessary in the first place while it has also targeted traditional Catholic organizations as hate groups and smeared conservative groups like Turning Point USA. This is a disgraceful betrayal of our district's proud history and an insult to every Alabamian."

The SPLC Action Fund's endorsement statement praised Figures for "advancing legislation that serves the interests of every American." But given the organization's federal indictment for fraud and secretly funding hate groups, we must now question whether that legislation actually promotes hate and racism rather than helping Americans.

Hampton Harris, the Republican nominee for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, is a proud Alabamian with deep roots in the district. He stands for unity in sharp contrast to the SPLC and now apparently Shomari Figures.

Harris is running to replace Washington insider hypocrisy with real leadership. He is committed to fighting for lower taxes, secure borders, school choice, and economic opportunity for working families free from the influence of scandal-plagued special interests.

"Voters in Alabama's 2nd District have a clear choice this November," Harris declared. "They can re-elect Congressman Figures, who has now embraced an indicted organization that funded hate groups, or they can send me to Congress as the Republican nominee to fight for unity and put Alabama families first."

District Background: Alabama's 2nd Congressional District

Alabama's 2nd Congressional District was redrawn following a court-ordered redistricting process, significantly altering the district's composition and making it one of the most competitive seats in the country. The new district includes the Wiregrass region, parts of Montgomery, and surrounding areas, creating a true swing district. Hampton Harris is the Republican nominee for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District in the 2026 general election. The seat is currently held by a Democrat and is widely viewed as a prime opportunity for Republicans to flip a district that could play a decisive role in determining control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

With control of the House expected to be closely contested nationwide, the outcome in Alabama's Second District may be a determining factor in whether Republicans maintain a

House majority.
