The people's voice of reason

"The Pretty Garden"

I recently came across a quote that says, “The prettier the garden, the dirtier are the hands of the gardener.” It got me to thinking. Everyone admires a healthy marriage from the outside…the smiles, the connection, the stability. But what people don't see is the work that goes on behind it. You see, marriage is like the garden. And the people in it are like the gardeners. Love isn't automatic, it's maintained.

Let's be honest, real love is messy. It means confronting your own flaws, your partner's triggers, and deciding every day to keep showing up.

Think of it this way. Vulnerability is the dirt. Accountability is the shovel. And forgiveness, the thing that makes it grow, is the water. The truth is, the deeper the connection the more both people have had to dig,…dig through trauma, through fear, through ego and still choose each other after it all.

When the storms come, and they will, real love doesn't just walk away. It stays. It adjusts. It fights…fights for the garden to survive. Beautiful marriages aren't built on big moments. They are built on small daily decisions that no one applause. Doing what's right, even when it's hard. Having hard conversations. Choosing “us” even when “me” would be so much easier.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

So the next time you admire couple who has it all, don't assume it came easy. Chances are they bleed for it. Sacrifice for it. Worked through years of uncomfortable growth for it. Because here's the truth…the prettier the garden, the dirtier the hands of the gardener. And the most beautiful marriages are the ones where both people got dirty and decided it’s worth it.

Many Blessings!

P.S. Happy 18th Wedding Anniversary to my husband, Brian! I love you!
