A Statewide Call for Alabamians to Pause, Reflect, and Pray for Healing
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - May 7, 2026 - On this sacred occasion of the National Day of Prayer, the Christian Coalition of Alabama urges every Alabamian - and every American - to pause, reflect, and turn their hearts toward God in prayer. In times like these, when our nation faces deep division, uncertainty, and moral challenges, we are reminded of the enduring truth found in Scripture: that God hears the prayers of His people.
The National Day of Prayer is not simply a date on the calendar - it is a call to action. It is a moment for believers across this state and nation to seek wisdom, to ask for guidance, and to pray for the healing of our land. We live in an era where faith is often pushed to the margins and foundational values are tested daily. Yet it is precisely in these moments that prayer becomes most powerful.

"We must not retreat from our responsibility as people of faith. Now is the time to come together - not in anger or division, but in prayer and faith. Now is the time to seek God's face and trust in His plan."
- Dr. Randy Brinson, President and Chairman, Christian Coalition of Alabama

A CALL TO PRAYER
The Christian Coalition of Alabama encourages churches, families, and individuals to participate in the National Day of Prayer by setting aside time to pray for:
• Our nation's leaders - that they may govern with wisdom and integrity
• Our communities - that they may be strengthened by unity and compassion
• Our churches - that they may stand boldly for truth
• Our future generations - that they may be guided by faith and purpose

"America was built on the foundation of faith, family, and freedom - and every great chapter of our history has been written by people who were willing to bow their heads before they raised their voices. On this National Day of Prayer, I urge every Alabamian to take a moment to pray for our state, for our country, and for the strength to defend the values that have always made this nation exceptional."
- Perry O. Hooper Jr., Board Member, Christian Coalition of Alabama

A PROMISE THAT ENDURES
As it is written in 2 Chronicles 7:14, "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray... then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." This promise remains as true today as ever.
Let this National Day of Prayer be a turning point - a moment when we recommit ourselves to the values that have long defined our state and our nation: faith, family, and freedom.

A NATIONAL OBSERVANCE WITH DEEP ROOTS
The call to prayer in America is older than the nation itself. In 1775, the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a new nation. In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of "humiliation, fasting, and prayer." In 1952, Congress passed a joint resolution - signed into law by President Harry S. Truman - establishing an annual National Day of Prayer. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation permanently designating the first Thursday in May for the observance. Today, on this 75th annual National Day of Prayer, tens of thousands of observances will be held across all 50 states - at state capitols, courthouses, churches, schools, military installations, businesses, and homes - uniting Americans of every background in prayer for our nation. Every president since 1952 has issued a proclamation marking this day, and each year governors, mayors, and local officials across the country join in calling their communities to prayer.
