Shades Mountain Baptist Pastor Announces Sudden Resignation

The Rev. George Wright, who has led Shades Mountain Baptist Church since August 15, 2021, delivered a surprise announcement Friday, telling church members via video that he is stepping down after not quite five years in the pulpit. Wright, 44, offered no specific reason for his departure, but emphasized that the decision had become clear only in recent weeks and asked the congregation to "please pray like crazy."

"Over the past couple of weeks it has become clear to us that our time here at Shades is coming to an end, and this Sunday, I will preach my final sermon as your pastor," Wright said in the video posted to the church's social media platforms. He described the decision as "heartbreaking" for his family but said they were trusting God's direction in this season.

Church leaders prefaced the video with a written statement assuring members that the congregation would move forward with unity and clarity. "Our leadership and staff are committed to walking through this season with care, unity and faith," the statement read, adding that the search for a new pastor would begin immediately as the church enters a "new season of ministry."

A Pastor's Assurance and Appeal

Wright stressed that nothing in his life disqualifies him from ministry, nor is anything preventing him from continuing to pursue God's calling. "I am more passionate and committed right now to live out this purpose than I've ever been," he said, reiterating his lifelong mission to preach God's Word and serve his family and community.

In his message, Wright asked members to pray fervently for the church, his family, the city, and for revival to continue. "Pray like crazy... that God would be glorified through this all," he said.

Final Sunday and Next Steps

Wright will preach his final sermon this Sunday, with services at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception in the church's Conference Center.

Shades Mountain Baptist, one of Alabama's largest congregations, now enters a pastoral transition at a time of continued growth and community engagement. Church leaders say they trust God's guidance as they begin the search for Wright's successor.
