Hampton Harris First to Qualify as Republican Candidate for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District Special Election

May 20, 2026 - Lowndesboro, Ala. – Today, Hampton Harris became the first Republican candidate to officially qualify for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District. He remains the only Republican who has qualified in the race, positioning himself to challenge incumbent Democrat Congressman Shomari Figures.

Harris reaffirms his commitment to fight for conservative values, economic opportunity, and strong representation for the people of District 2. By qualifying first and standing alone on the Republican side, he has once again demonstrated the determination and courage needed to reclaim this seat for Alabama's Christian conservative voices.

Harris was the Republican nominee for this district prior to the recent special session that allowed Alabama to use a previously passed map from 2023. When others hesitated amid legal uncertainty and political maneuvering, he remained steadfast. He knocked doors, listened to families, small business owners, farmers, and veterans across the district. His resolve did not waver with changing maps. It will not stop now that Alabama has secured a major victory in restoring fair, state drawn districts.

"I was the only one willing to challenge Shomari Figures from the beginning, and today I became the first Republican to qualify for this race," said Harris. "While others waited on the sidelines, I got to work building support and fighting every day for the conservative principles that built Alabama. That hard work did not depend on favorable maps, and it will not stop now. District 2 deserves a fighter who puts Alabama first, not Washington insiders or national Democratic agendas."
