Candidate Qualifying Opens for August 11, 2026 Special State Senate Primary Election

Candidate qualifying is now officially open for the August 11, 2026 Special State Senate Primary Election, the Alabama Democratic Party announced. The qualifying window will remain open until Tuesday, June 2 at 8 a.m., giving prospective candidates a brief but important period to enter the race.

The special primary will determine the Democratic nominees for State Senate Districts 25 and 26, two Montgomery‑area seats that became vacant earlier this year. With both districts carrying significant political and community influence, party officials expect strong interest from potential candidates.

Online Qualifying Strongly Encouraged

Those wishing to qualify for either district may complete the process online through the Alabama Democratic Party's official website, aldemocrats.org. Party leaders emphasized that the online portal is the fastest and most efficient way to submit qualifying documents.

"We strongly encourage everyone to use the online option," the Party said in its announcement, noting that digital submissions help streamline processing and reduce delays during the short qualifying window.

In‑Person Qualifying Also Available

While online qualifying is preferred, candidates may also submit their paperwork in person. The Alabama Democratic Party Headquarters in Montgomery will accept in‑person submissions during its regular operating hours, which are listed on the Party's website.

Party officials reminded candidates that in‑person submissions must be completed before the 8 a.m. deadline on June 2, as late filings cannot be accepted under state law.

Where to Get More Information

Individuals seeking additional details about qualifying requirements, district information, or the special election process may contact the Alabama Democratic Party directly:

Email: qualifying@aldemocrats.org

The Party encourages prospective candidates to reach out early to ensure they have all necessary documents and meet all state and party requirements before the deadline.

A Compressed Timeline Ahead of August Primary

With the qualifying window closing quickly and the special primary set for August 11, campaigns in Districts 25 and 26 are expected to move rapidly. Once qualifying ends, the Party will certify the candidate list and prepare for what is likely to be an active summer election season in the Montgomery region.
